You have been in an accident or suffered misfortune and have been referred to a lawyer to help you. Many questions and fears swirl through your mind. What will happen? How much will it cost? What do I bring?
Your initial meeting with your lawyer is important. It is a time for your lawyer to gather facts and to begin the legal analysis of your case and it is a time for you to get to know your lawyer. In order to make this important first meeting as productive as possible for you and your lawyer, it is important that you bring the following with you to your meeting:
- Photos or other documentation related to the accident: this may include photos that you took, formal police reports or any other documentation related to the circumstances which caused your accident;
- Copies of any correspondence: if you have communicated with potential defendants or insurance companies then it is important to have your lawyer review those communications;
- Copies of bills incurred because of the accident; and
- Estimates of future expenses that you are likely to incur because of the accident.
While it is important to have these documents, you should not postpone your first meeting if you do not have one or more of these documents. They can always be obtained later and it is important that you get legal help as soon as possible.
